Archaeologist, heritage and public: raising awareness about the profession
Andris Sne, University of Latvia
Abstract: The archaeological research has become increasingly linked with the heritage issues in the last decades and archaeologists have often found themselves among different stakeholders and interests. The archaeological studies had been involved in different political and social context throughout the previous centuries, including the attributed ideological role of archaeological past in the rise of national statehood.
The paper, on the basis of experiences from small-scale archaeologists’ community in Latvia, will address the questions what does it mean to be archaeologist in present-day state and how mutual relations between archaeologist and public influence the development of both research and profession.
